An earthquake is just one of the violent and unpredictable natural calamities that every family should be prepared of especially for those who are in the Pacific Rim. Every family should perform personal preparation along with the earthquake preparedness programs and safety measures from the government.

The joint effort involves retrofitting and building earthquake resistant buildings and lifeline structures. Most buildings in Japan were already designed to be earthquake resistant thus helping its people to become better equipped to fight such calamity. Every family must then do their part of the effort by attending seminars that will help cultivate awareness to the families and members of the community. Preparation includes emotional preparedness in case a calamity might strike because most people die not of the hazards caused by the disaster but because of panic. The effects could be lessened as more and more people would be more aware of the disaster and how to combat nervousness.

Aside from building establishments that are resistant to earthquake, it is advisable that every family would keep earthquake survival kits that would sustain their families during the calamity. It should include the most basic needs of man, which are food, water, clothes and communication. Flashlights with extra batteries should be kept along with other necessities. Do not limit yourself with the things that you can include in the kit especially if you have a pet or a family member that requires additional supplies.

During the emergency, you will be spending most of the time in your home so it’s advisable to check for possible hazards inside your home. Start by making sure the shelves are fastened securely to the walls with the heavy objects being stored in the lowest portion of the shelf. Brace overhead light fixtures to prevent them from falling.

Create an emergency communication plan so you can stay in touch with every family members and monitor their safety and condition. Earthquake preparedness would be incomplete without battery operated radio or television wherein you will know the directives from the government and updates outside your own house. Preparation will not prevent the hazards that may be brought by the natural calamities but at least the effects will be minimized and you’ll be more in control of the situation.
